The East Fork Carson River
The East Fork Carson provides a more stark, remote setting than the West Fork, but just as many fish are stocked: 13,500 rainbow trout in the 10- to 12-inch class. Roadside access is excellent. That is why this stream is a favorite for those who know of it.
My favorite section is just upstream from Highway 4 along Wolf Road. You can find a lot of pocket water and several pools here, and the water is clear, cold, and pure. The fishing is better here during the evening hatch. In the spring, you might need mosquito repellent.
Another good section is just downstream from where Monitor Creek enters the East Fork, at the junction of Highways 89 and 4. There just always seem to be good numbers of fish in this area.
From Stockton, take Highway 4 east over Ebbetts Pass (which is long, slow, narrow, and curvy) and continue on 88/89 to Woodfords and the junction with Highway 89. Turn right. Direct access is available along Highway 89 between Markleeville and Highway 4.

List of waters OK for planting
The following waters have been approved by the CA DFG for planting of Catchable Trout (1/2 lb. fish) as of March 7, 2011.
DFG recently responded to a legal action challenging its hatchery and stocking operations, and completed an Environmental Impact Report/Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS) that considers species and habitats affected by hatchery-raised rainbow trout. One of the conditions of the EIR/EIS is that each water planted throughout California must go through a Pre-Stocking Evaluation Protocol. This evaluation requires DFG to consider each sensitive or listed species in each water relative to the stocking of trout.
The list of waters can be viewed here. Click here for the list of “Fingerling Trout Release Waters”. Click here to see the DFG Fishing Guide.

SNOW, How unusual
It's April 8th and we are getting dumping of snow. It started about 15 minutes ago. It is not abnormal for this time of year but this is the most we have had in a long time. We are two weeks away from Easter and three weeks away from opening trout season for rivers and streams. The campground master pulled into Crystals Spring Campground two days ago and is planning to be open for the last weekend in April. Right now the river has slowed down and is very fishable under the bridge. If you want to tough it, the campground is great but if you want warm leisure come stay with us. Spring is here, no matter how white it is. Willie is waiting for you.
